Our EDM Hole Drilling Capabilities

Our specialized equipment allows for the drilling of incredibly small to large holes without compromising accuracy. This flexibility is crucial for all of the industries we serve, and our EDM hole drilling services meet the most stringent requirements, offering solutions that are precise and time and cost-efficient.

Cutting-Edge Tech

Quality EDM hole drilling machines are vital to our hole drilling process, providing the required precision and efficiency to maintain high standards of workmanship. From small hole EDM drilling to deep holes, we can tackle it with our state-of-the-art tech.

Materials We Work With

For drill materials we can use any electrically conductive material on an EDM. It needs to be conductive to generate a spark; electricity is what cuts the material.

Industries Served

Since electricity, rather than physical force, is used to cut through the material, we’re able to work with a variety of industries. The unique characteristics of EDM allow it to work with a wide range of conductive materials, offering versatility in diverse applications.

EDM machining really shines with materials that are too hard to traditionally machine or shapes that traditional machining can’t create, such as square corners. It’s sometimes useful for the mold-making or tool and die industries.

Below, we’ll dive into some frequently asked questions about EDM hole drilling, along with our specific practices.

Common Questions About EDM Hole Drilling

  • What is EDM hole drilling?

Electrical discharge machining (EDM) uses electrical discharges or sparks to erode material, allowing for the creation of holes with exceptional accuracy and smoothness. Unlike conventional drilling, EDM hole drilling can produce micron-sized holes, even in the hardest conductive materials, without physical contact.

  • What is the EDM hole drilling process?

Generally, a metal workpiece is submerged in a dielectric fluid, and a thin, electrically charged electrode is advanced towards the workpiece. When the electrode approaches closely enough, electrical discharges occur between the electrode and the workpiece, and these discharges produce intense heat that vaporizes a tiny area of the workpiece, creating a hole.

At Ephrata Precision, we also handle wire EDM and sink EDM. With a wire EDM, an electrified wire is fed through the part to cut out a particular shape. By contrast, with a sink EDM, an electrode is machined and then used in the sink EDM, where it’s electrified to cut or erode the shape of the electrode into a workpiece.

  • How small of a hole can EDM drill?

The precision of EDM hole drilling technology shines in its capability to produce exceptionally small holes—sometimes diameters as minute as a few microns. This level of refinement is especially important in areas where the preciseness of every component can significantly impact the overall functionality and efficiency of a system.

When it comes to us specifically, our hole popper EDM is typically used to create a round hole, and we can drill or burn a hole as small as .008” in diameter.

  • What are the advantages of EDM hole drilling?

There are many advantages of EDM hole drilling, namely its ability to drill extremely small and precise holes that conventional drilling methods can’t achieve. Also, EDM hole drilling doesn’t require physical contact between the tool and the workpiece, so there’s no mechanical stress or deformation imparted onto the part.

Plus, EDM can easily machine any electrically conductive material regardless of its hardness, giving it a significant edge over traditional machining, where tool wear is a concern with hard materials.

  • Are there any disadvantages of EDM hole drilling?

While the benefits of EDM hole drilling are substantial, there are certain limitations to consider:

Fewer Accepted Materials: The requirement for the material to be electrically conductive restricts the range of materials that can be machined using this method.

Cost: The initial setup and operation costs of EDM hole drilling can be higher than those of conventional drilling.

Environmental Implications: The use of dielectric fluid in the process means careful handling to meet environmental regulations, contributing to the cost and complexity.

Despite these drawbacks, the precision and quality achieved with EDM hole drilling often justify the investment.
